Navy and Rutgers opened the Mid-Atlantic Premier League with a Friday night game that ended in Navy’s favor, but not comfortably so.

Rutgers, which left the MetNY Union to join the MARFU Premiership was up to the challenge and in a game where Navy probably had the run of play, were good enough to put 15 points on the board. The Middies won 24-15.

“Those Rutgers guys wear their red jerseys with a lot of pride, I’ll tell you that,” said Navy head coach Mike Flanagan. “They hit you hard in the first minute and they hit you hard in the 80th. I think they’re ready for the Premier League.”

Navy had scoring opportunities but in a stop-start game where the Middies suffered some yellow card issues, they couldn’t quite shake loose the hosts.

“I don’t think we played particularly well,” said Flanagan. “I wish we’d played better, but there’s obviously a lot of work to be done.”

Navy 24 Rutgers 15.
